Albany Comptroller Tom Nitido appears to be pandering to those of us who appreciate sound financial management. We greatly appreciate it. In today's letter to the editor in the Times Union
As a city, we have a choice. We can control spiraling heath care costs and provide our citizens the services they expect for their tax dollars. Or we can continue to allow costs to rage out of control, resulting in layoffs and an inability to provide quality health care for our retirees.
He also gets in a couple of good zingers. Tom, you had us at hello. A must read. So, any other political spines in town or is Mr. Nitido the only one?

Responsible Government (none / 0) (#1)

This letter and the proposal for ongoing labor-management dialogue seems pretty reasonable.  It's what adults do.

At all levels of government, health care costs are going to eviscerate our budgets from within, especially with the increase of retirees over the next 5 - 10 years.  Read "Running on Empty" by Pete Peterson.

Kudos to Mr. Nitido to speaking truth to power.

Unfortunately... (none / 0) (#2)

Unfortunately health care costs in general are spiraling out of control. That's making this a more prominent object of frustration. I think the problem is that the Pharmaceutical industry has about as much regulation as the crack industry. They sell products that are addictive by being life-saving. The American with a heart condition can't boycott the company that makes a drug they're taking to stay alive.

Maybe the government should bid out cures and treatments. Like "$100 Billion for the cure for cancer, $50 million for a medium herpes treatment. Then they make the pills, and we don't pay so much.
