"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli
The Coeyman's MoneyfillBy DIA, Section News
Seems it was just last week we were chatting about the atrocious financial management of Mayor Jennings. Perhaps even the true believers will spit some coffee over this one. While readling this its important to remember two things:
1) Mayor Jennings has told us that if he can't use more of the Pine Bush preserve as a garbage dump that the city will be in such financial bad shape that "no one will want this job". 2) Its currently the year 2006. So, obviously the Mayor must be working hard to find a solution to this rather pressing issue: Albany identified the Coeymans site for its new dump in 1993 and has been paying for it ever since. The city already had given millions of dollars in nonrefundable purchase options, and expects to take ownership this fall.$5.2 million. Non-refundable. Those are your tax dollars. Anyway, now that we've paid for this site, how about we see if it would make a good landfill? About one-third of the property in Coeymans where the city of Albany wants to build a new regional dump is federally protected wetlands, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.Oops. Only took 13 years and $5.3 million to figure that one out. The good news is with another 2.5 years of the Bush administration we might be able to get the whole "federally protected wetlands" thing taken care of. Oh yeah, 13 years and $5.3 million and still no one in the city has even bothered to file a permit to move forward with making this property a landfill. They must really care about Albany and the looming financial disaster. Jennings 2005 - One City. One People. One Big Financial Disaster.
