Audits!

By DIA, Section News

As a resident of Albany County and the City of Albany I am strongly in favor of more audits, even if they are politically motivated.

Let's see some more.

Robocop 3

Anyone else getting the scary robocall from the police union?

I find it odd that the cops are calling me and telling me how they think I should vote. Has this happened previously? It is a first for me.

It's Come to This

By DIA, Section News

As I ponder the ridiculous attempt by the TU to try to make John McCain's latest bad choice as appearing "presidential" it reminds me of when I drove by the Albany Democratic HQ yesterday. It appears the Albany "Democrats" have no opinion on the current presidential race as there are no Obama/Biden signs in their windows. To their credit, they have not put up any McCain Palin signs either. Yet. Those same windows were plastered with Clinton signs during the primary.

As for the Times Union. Apparently you only think with your pocket books. Remember the last presidential election? We were fighting two wars and they weren't going well. Still fighting them. Still aren't going well. Apparently some problems for some super rich bankers on Wall Street are more of a crisis than having 200,000 or so US troops in the line of fire? Did anyone suspend their campaigns in 2004 and go to Iraq? Don't look now, but your true color is showing, and it looks a whole lot like the color used for the picture of the first president of the US that is in your pocket. I wonder what he would've done in a time of crisis?

PS. The next time there is some "crisis" I recommend that instead of "reporting" on it, you go and try to help fix it. Live up to your own high standards. Don't stand around with your dicks in your hands and say "there is a cat in a tree and mayor jennings is frantically taking calls on his radio show to try to wake up an employee to deal with it". No...no. Climb that fucking tree and show us how to lead.

Please.

Update [2008-9-28 20:23:54 by DIA]: Perhaps its just coincidence. Maybe the Albany Dems all of a sudden realized there was an election coming up and decided to put up some Obama signs. Maybe my post had nothing to do with their reaction (still no Soares signs). Or perhaps it did. And between the choice of sitting through a bunch of meetings in a roomful of people where quite recently Jerry Jennings was seen as some sort of god or writing a bit on this blog, I'll take the later if the end result is the same. If it gets the local Democrats to festoon their HQ with Obama Biden signs, as they have since my post, I'll skip those meetings. (when i say some sort of god, i'm of course thinking in the norse or perhaps hindu sense of things. They've got a lot of gods. Hell, Bacchus was a god somewhere (editors note: Rome). Seems to me like the guy was maybe qualified to be a mayor of a small city and that being a god was a bit of a stretch. So, it is a low bar i use when I refer to some thinking of jennings as some sort of god). Anyway, did everyone have to take the mythology classes I had to in NY public school?

If that didn't really make sense, the end result is that the Albany Dem HQ no longer looks like an abandoned office and they put up some signs supporting the presidential candidate from their party.

Mayor Jennings' Budgeting - Know When to Say When

By DIA, Section News
Posted on Wed Sep 24, 2008 at 04:32:57 AM EST

Recently an employee of the Convention Center Authority resigned from that job and got a new one. Smart move since the Authority will be a done deal soon. Where did she find new work? City Hall, of course. Even got herself a pay raise. I guess all that expertise she picked up while the convention center authority sat on its hands was considered valuable in City Hall and she is the new Deputy City Clerk.

Now I'm sure you are thinking, "with the looming budget crisis for the city, did we really need a Deputy City Clerk...can we afford such a luxury?". This is a good question. But the even better question is, "What happened to the previous Deputy City Clerk?"

Here is the answer:

Jerry Jennings got his Board of Estimate and Apportionment together and created a new position in City Hall. That is what you do when facing a budget crisis, increase the budget to create more patronage jobs! The BoEaA voted 4-1 in favor of creating the new position. Shawn Morris was the only no vote.

So, the old Deputy City Clerk got a new job, the convention center employee got the Deputy's job and everything was good in Jennings' adminstration.

This is why we need a new mayor. We are facing back to back 30% tax increases. I maintain that there are plenty of easy cost cuts we can make to balance the budget. Jennings has been spending our money like a there is a limitless supply and even this most recent example shows that he has no intention of stopping. So, either vote him out or expect to pay up. Your choice.

Before the Cock Crows...

Perhaps Jerry is getting too old to be Mayor. He seems to be suffering from some sort of severe form of memory loss. Or perhaps it is integrity loss? But then again, you can't lose something you never had.
In an interview Friday, Jennings initially said he was "not that close to the group or Mr. (Sam) Fresina."

When pressed, Jennings, who was briefly a member of Local 190 as a younger man, then said: "I've been friends with the Fresinas for a long time."
Anyone remember this article from 1998. It seems to mention Jennings and the Fresina family. You be the judge of whether Jerry in 2008 is telling the truth about his association with Sam Fresina.
Fresina has been a close political ally of Jennings, who said he stood behind Fresina and was unaware of the ethics charges. Jennings said he doesn't believe the allegations.

``Absolutely no way,'' Jennings said. ``I've known him too long. I wish I had more labor leaders like him that I could work with.''
Hmmm. Seems like Mayor Jennings in 2008 doesn't agree with Mayor Jennings in 1998.
Fresina's union topped the mayor's list of contributors in his first mayoral bid in 1993. In Jennings' 1997 re-election campaign, Laborers' groups allied with Fresina donated more than $15,000 to the mayor's coffers.

Fresina and Jennings have worked together on a $6 million federal lead-abatement grant. The city and the union teamed up to hire and train workers to clean up lead in an estimated 500 homes in low-income neighborhoods. Jennings on Thursday cut the ribbon on the program's first house on Orange Street. Fresina, who Dolcimascolo said is vacationing in Florida, was not present.

Fresina and several relatives have also served in the Jennings administration. Fresina was a member of the mayor's transition team in 1993.

The mayor's executive assistant, Nicholas D'Antonio, is Fresina's cousin, as is Nicholas' brother, John D'Antonio, who runs the city's recreation programs and was recently tapped to be assistant commissioner. Fresina's son, Samuel A. Fresina, is the president of the Albany firefighters union.
Hey remember when Nicholas was just the mayor's "assistant"? Anyone know what Nicholas is doing now? Oh, right, he is now the Commissioner of DGS. I'm sure Jerry and Nicky never mentioned Uncle Sammy when deciding if Nicky was qualified for the job despite only having a high school education. Never came up.

Jerry, you should know that it is not good to deny your friends in times of trouble. Or your party. First you abandon the democrats and endorse Republicans. And now you claim to not be associated with Sam Fresina?

Night of the Living Dead V - The American Dream

By DIA, Section News
Posted on Fri Sep 19, 2008 at 05:57:57 AM EST

I won't run down the list of things I've been right about, I don't have the time (hi, john sweeney!! Go to jail much?). But I'm going to revisit some comments I've made as we face the complete meltdown of the US financial system, housing markets, etc.

1) The Times Union wanted to let you know everything would be OK. I told you it wouldn't. Of course I deal in facts, they deal in fantasy. About a year ago they ran this headline, which I correctly mocked.
Brighter days for economy in analyst's outlook
Yeah, future is so bright I gotta wear shades. Nice work TU and favored analyst.

2) As Wall Street goes, so goes NY. No bailouts for Mayor Jennings when the state is in such trouble. I wish someone could've warned us this was going to happen. Ring Ring
As I've been saying for some time, we are on a crash course with a harsh economic reality. With the current management there is only one real avenue for Albany. Being bailed out by the state. Barring some magical solution, we have a date with reality in the near future. And reality can be a harsh mistress.

Ring, ring...hello...just a minute....Mayor Jennings, it's for you.
3) Here I was just being my normal asshole self. But once again, I was right.
It is a new day in the US economy. Oil passed $130 gallon last night. Tax receipts are down in NY. Consumer confidence is at a historic low in NY. Wall Street is facing historic layoffs and thus the state is facing a big budget deficit. Is this good news? No. But it is the new reality. We all would love for every state city and county worker to never have to worry about their jobs, never have to work that hard other than on election day and occasionally pave our streets or something. Remember when Corning had 70 janitors on staff for city hall alone? Those were different times. They are OVER. Now, you can fight reality and we know you will. But reality has a fiscally conservative bias. And all of you state city and county workers who want the good times to continue have one other big problem on your hands. The rest of us can get fired or layed off anytime. Many of us have. Our jobs don't have pensions. Our health insurance costs us a lot of money. And then we open the paper and read things like this.
4) And since this is an Albany blog, how about we wrap up with my prediction for the 2008 city budget, which proved to be 100% accurate. This is the budget that Jerry Jennings called "responsible". Now we know we are facing a historic budget crisis just a year later.
Today is the final chance for the public to make any comments on the 2008 budget. If you'd like to do so, attend the common council meeting tonight and waste your time bringing up any valid concerns and or outright support for the mayor's plan to borrow and spend and mortgage your future.

So far there has been public comment on the issue of parking fines going up up up. Valid points.

There doesn't appear to be much concern for the overall financial health of the city. So here is what I predict. The common council has until the end of November to make any changes to the proposed budget. At the end of the month they will make some big fuss about not raising parking fines, and they might not raise them. Nothing will be done about the fact that despite raising taxes this year's budget includes a ton of borrowing to "balance" it.

The city of Albany is like the Average American Consumer.
For the past two years, and for the first time since the Great Depression, Americans are spending more than they earn. In 2006, Americans saved at a rate of negative 1 percent, according to statistics released February 1 by the Commerce Department, meaning they not only spent all of their after-tax income, they also dipped into their savings or increased the amount they borrowed. The savings rate in 2005 was negative 0.4 percent.
So, I guess we shouldn't blame Jerry the Average. He is just doing what the rest of America is doing. And your taxes are going up. If you don't mind that, keep voting with your pocketbook patronage in mind.
When you read things like "for the first time since the great depression", you should pay attention. Jerry didn't. I hope the rest of you did. Welcome to your new America. Look for your bills for your mortgage on the future to start arriving soon.

If you are wondering what happened, you've been robbed. At least John Sweeney will be going to prison. And hopefully Bruno. Since there is no legal system in Albany, Jerry Jennings should be fine. But it doesn't change the reality of what has happened. If you work for a living, you have been fucked. Get used to working harder for that same living.

Cheers and good luck.

Orange Flight

From the TU
It seems as though the "esteemed" Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings put a whole new meaning on the phrase "God helps those that help themselves."

Really, did Mayor Jennings have to give himself a raise when the city of Albany is in such dire straits?

No wonder so many people — like myself — are moving out of Albany.

Primary Day

Did anyone pay for a real poll this time around? With all the big money sloshing around the CD race I would expect someone did. Perhaps they have an inkling of how this is going to go down. Polling aside, I think the rest of us are going to have to just WAG it. I have no idea who will win anything today. As usual, I'm hoping the establishment backed candidates lose as the establishment's track record for helping the people sucks.

Helpful hint when voting. If you are on the fence about someone who claims to be a democrat but hasn't really demonstrated that up until this point but seems to be saying all the right things now, think about Joe Lieberman.
